Meet the Board: Edward L. Johnson

Why do you serve on the San Antonio Lighthouse Board?

I serve on the San Antonio Lighthouse Board because one of the biggest barriers to equity in education, healthcare, employment and recreation for people with disabilities and/or other disadvantages in life is access to dependable transportation. My sincere belief is there must be a bridge between the advocacy/training and the transportation provider to truly understand the needs and roles of both parties. The San Antonio Lighthouse is the perfect organization to meet my philosophy and community service needs.

What do you love the most about the San Antonio Lighthouse?

I have been on the Board just over a year which means my tenure has been wholly within the pandemic under a modified format for meetings. However, even though meetings have been mostly virtual you can feel the level of dedication and purposeful joy from the staff and members of the Board. Being a part of an organization that has this level of commitment pleases my soul and it inspires me to be a better servant-leader within my personal and professional life. Truly, words cannot express the sense of pride I feel when I participate in meetings and events with the Lighthouse.

What are some of your hobbies?

My family would say my hobby is eating. I must admit I am a “foodie.” I love trying new and interesting delicacies and my range of restaurants span from the street vendor to the ‘mom and pop’ to the posh restaurants.  However, previously living in Florida I would drag my family out on weekend drives down the coastlines looking at the expensive mansions saying “one-day I will own a mansion like that.” I may never achieve that here on Earth, but I am looking forward to it on the other side. 😊

What is a fun fact about you?

A fun fact about me is I love, love, love hotdogs. I will eat them for any meal – breakfast, lunch, dinner or a midnight snack.

I serve as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer with VIA Metropolitan Transit, where I oversee bus and paratransit operations, vehicle and facilities maintenance, finance and accounting, procurement, information technology, human resources and safety/police/training divisions.

Please list your favorite book, podcast, or a favorite quote:

My favorite book is “Up From Slavery: An Autobiography” by Booker T. Washington and my favorite quote is “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
