Meet the Board: Natalie Watkins

Why do you serve on the San Antonio Lighthouse Board?

The Lighthouse has been such an integral part of my own blindness rehabilitation journey. Having learned assistive technology from the technology team, I use the knowledge I gained from the Lighthouse every day. When I was employed the Lighthouse helped me select a closed-circuit television, which resulted in my being able to continue my job for years. In summary, I have personal first-hand experience with the power of the Lighthouse in the lives of the blind and visually impaired.

What do you love the most about the San Antonio Lighthouse?

I love the San Antonio Lighthouse’s sense of mission and commitment to living out its core values.

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to read audiobooks on a wide variety of topics. In addition, I write poetry and creative nonfiction. I do content creation for a nonprofit press specializing in writers with disabilities. On a good day, I even exercise!

What is a fun fact about you?

Long ago, in a body far far away, I hiked part of the Great Wall of China.

Full time volunteer with the Lighthouse board, Oleb Books and faith-based activities.

Favorite book, podcast or a favorite quote:

“When you are a young person, you are like a young creek, and you meet many rocks, many obstacles and difficulties on your way. You hurry to get past these obstacles and get to the ocean.

But as the creek moves down through the fields, it becomes larger and calmer and it can enjoy the reflection of the sky. It’s wonderful. You will arrive at the sea anyway so enjoy the journey. Enjoy the sunshine, the sunset, the moon, the birds, the trees, and the many beauties along the way. Taste every moment of your daily life.”

-Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh
